Southbridge EDC OKs permitting guidebook

Designed to streamline business process

April 03, 2011
SOUTHBRIDGE — In a continuing effort to make Southbridge more appealing to incoming businesses, the Southbridge Economic Development Commission has assembled a permitting guidebook to make the process of bringing a business to town easier and simpler.

"It came from a discussion of, 'What can we do to make this process easier?'" said Mark Morin, a member of the Economic Development Commission and owner of Morin Builders Inc. "A lot of towns have guides like this, but I personally didn't care for them. Since I'm the guy that is usually come into the town hall to get permits, I knew the most about it."

The book is a step-by-step guide to what permits to take out, what boards and committees need to be met with and what inspections are necessary to open a business.

For example, the second section of the guidebook gives information about what needs to be done through the Assessor's Department, Department of Public Works, Economic Development and Planning, Fire Department, Health Department, Inspections Department and Police Department.

The guidebook has a list of prices for services they offer. For the Department of Public Works, it lists how much water connection fees and sewer connection fees are based on how large the building is.
