BOSTON — Sen. Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) bid farewell to PFC Victor E. Martinez-Pietri of Southbridge, a member of the 182nd Regiment, 1st Battalion, Massachusetts National Guard Unit, that has deployed to Afghanistan.

Moore participated in the deployment ceremony on March 27 at the Conte Forum of Boston College honoring members of the 182nd as they leave for a year's service in Afghanistan.

"I am honored to call Victor a friend, and I am so very proud of him and his commitment to serve his country," Moore stated. Moore met Private Martinez-Pietri through the Southbridge Police Department's Cops 'N Kids Summer Program where the Southbridge guardsman served as a youth counselor.

Martinez-Pietri, a 2009 graduate of Southbridge High School where he was a three-sport standout and senior class president, enlisted in the National Guard during his senior year. He has been attending Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts.

Victor is the son of Luz M. Pietri and stepson of Johnny Lopez of Southbridge.
