Tantasqua OK's $19.3M budget proposal

March 22, 2011
STURBRIDGE — Among the major topics discussed at last Wednesday's Tantasqua Regional School Committee meeting was the proposed budget of $19,352,003 for fiscal year 2012.

The budget marks a $322,731 increase over the budget that was approved for fiscal year 2011 and a $366,600 increase of 2010's budget. In addition, the committee also approved asking each of the five towns it represents to combine to borrow money up to $300,000 for the district's share of the junior high school roof project. According to committee member Michael Valanzola, the district will use $208,000 of its school choice monies to begin the project, as well as a $600,000 reimbursement it intends to receive from the state, but the committee is hoping that approximately $300,000 in outstanding costs will be covered by Brimfield, Brookfield, Holland, Sturbridge, and Wales. Unless the governing bodies in each of the towns place the item on the respective town meeting agendas, an automatic approval would likely occur for this request.

"Financially, this would not affect the towns until fiscal year 2013," Superintendent Daniel Durgin said. "This project is a big investment for a roof that would be guaranteed to last between 25 and 30 years, and we are hoping to put solar panels on the roof as well."
