Selectmen candidates to debate

Sturbridge hopefuls to address variety of issues

March 17, 2011
STURBRIDGE — Four of the five individuals running for Board of Selectmen positions have already confirmed that they will participate in a debate on Wednesday, March 30, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

Arranged by Board of Selectmen Chairman Thomas Creamer, the televised debate will be moderated by Town Moderator Mike Caplette. It will feature incumbent Mary Blanchard and candidate Priscilla Gimas (running for three-year seats), as well as candidates Angeline Ellison and Alphonso Esposito (running for the one-year seat vacated by Edward Goodwin). Incumbent Scott Garieri, who is also seeking re-election to a three-year seat, has also confirmed his participation in the event.

"I have been contacted by many residents who inquired about the possibility of having a debate between the candidates," Creamer said. "We commend these individuals for their commitment to the democratic process by allowing residents an opportunity to better understand and compare their positions on issues"

In addition to answering questions by Caplette, the candidates will probably be fielding questions from residents as well. Creamer hopes to have a phone-in session, although the details for this aspect of the debate have not been finalized. Residents might be allowed to call in and ask questions during the debate, or the call-in session could be delayed until the end of the event.
