SOUTHBRIDGE — Dr. John Howland is putting the good book to good use in his medical practice.

The Southbridge MD is the New England regional director of the Worcester Guild of the Catholic Medical Association and worked to assemble the book "Heart Sounds."

"This book tries to show what is unique about the Catholic system of healthcare," said Howland. "What is different about it. We were having a brainstorming session over a barbeque and we were talking about what brings us together. There was a priest there with us and he just said, 'Stories!' The idea just clicked. The best way to explain something, the way Jesus did, through stories."

He worked with Janice Steinhagen to put works together through success stories that 12 members of the guild had shared. Each of the 12 members of the group brought a different aspect of Catholic healthcare. They brought different types of doctors, such as a psychiatrist, surgeon and a pediatrician.
