Councilors ready to welcome new member

Spinelli to debut at meeting Feb. 21

February 17, 2011
SOUTHBRIDGE — The Southbridge Town Council will welcome new Councilor Larry Spinelli at its meeting Monday, Feb. 21.

In a race where the public showed no clear sign of voter favoritism by Election Day, Spinelli defeated opponent Gary Fontaine by a mere 168 votes.

"I really think that [Spinelli] brings a lot to the table," said Councilor Denise Clemence. "I am also really proud of his family. I think they did an excellent job as a family unit in supporting him. They really helped and supported him the whole time. I've met his wife and she's a jewel. Then again, he is a lifelong Southbridge guy with a great presence in town."

Clemence added that Spinelli's unique voice and independent views would benefit the town greatly. She believes that his years of service in the planning and developing boards will allow the rest of the council to learn from his experience.

"I think we need to get the word out more to vote," said Clemence. "We need to see more people taking a part in our local government. I was happy to see a somewhat bigger turnout. There was a lot of talk about only about 800 to 900 people expected to show up and there was about double that. It shows that people were concerned enough to show up on a very cold day. Regardless of the outcome, it was a testament that the people are starting to listen and take a more active role in the local government."
