SOUTHBRIDGE — To Larry Spinelli, the Town Council really needs to become a role model for Southbridge, showing its members can respect differing opinions while promoting the value of service to the community.

"What we need is a two-way street of communication and education where people are willing to listen and find common ground," he said. "… I'm hoping my setting an example will be a big step to that."

Spinelli, 65, is running against Gary Fontaine (see related story) in a special election Tuesday, Feb. 15. One of them will fill a 16-month vacancy on the council created by the death of long-time Councilor Laurent McDonald last November.

A 39-year process engineer at Dexter-Russell by day, Spinelli is probably best known in town government circles for his 26 years on the Planning Board, many as chairman. But even those were largely under the radar — a scan of the Evening News found just one story specifically about him, namely his intention to retire from that board (which ended up being short-lived).
