Town clerks could face 'difficult' time

6th District race date might be same as municipal elections

February 08, 2011
Having a new 6th Worcester District election in May between Peter Durant and Geraldo Alicea may throw local towns into a tailspin, town clerks in the district say.

"It's going to be a lot of extra work, having two elections within three days," said Darlene Tully, town clerk in Charlton, where local town elections will be held May 7. Plus, she said, Charlton's Annual Town Meeting is on May 16.

In Spencer and East Brookfield, things are even tighter — local elections will be held on May 10, the same day being proposed for the new 6th District election.

East Brookfield Town Clerk Virginia Allen said the impact on her office would depend in part on whether the special election can be put on the same ballot, or if they need to be on separate ballots, as was required in last year's special election to replace Sen. Edward Kennedy.

"If it is two elections, it is going to be double the money — I will have to have two sets of election workers for 13 hours," Allen said, adding that East Brookfield's Annual Town Meeting is the next day. "If I can put it on my annual election ballot, it might be easier."
