STURBRIDGE — It is never easy to open up a new business in this challenging economic climate, and it is even harder to do most of the work at that business by yourself.

Sturbridge native Deanne Cardenas opened up Steladenas Specialty Cakes and Bake Shop in Fiskdale nearly two months ago, and despite doing most of the work on her own, the business has experienced success right out of the gate.

"The business has been very steady here," Cardenas said. "The weather hasn't cooperated at times, but that has been true for every business in the area."

Ten years ago, Cardenas ran a small home-based business that specialized in wedding cakes, and after experiencing success in that endeavor, she decided to open up a shop in Sturbridge. The building used for the bakery was once a health agency office, so several renovations were required in order to transform it into a bakery, including extensive plumbing and electrical work. After purchasing equipment from Gillette Restaurant Equipment, of North Brookfield, the building gradually began to take the form of a fully operational bakery.

"The baked goods at Steladenas are outstanding," said Joanne Reiter, of Brimfield, who discovered the bakery a few weeks ago and plans to become a frequent customer. "The assortment of foods is tremendous."
