SOUTHBRIDGE — The Gateway Players Theatre Inc. has started rehearsals for its upcoming play, "The Heiress."

The play is scheduled for March 18, 19 and 25 through 27 at the Gateway Barn at 111 Main St.

The play's plot revolves around Catherine Sloper who lives with her doctor father, Austin, who resents Catherine, as her mother died during childbirth. She meets and falls in love with Morris Townsend and quickly plans to marry him.

Austin suspects Morris is only after Catherine's inheritance and threatens to disinherit her if she marries him. Catherine does not care and plans to elope with Morris, but tells him about her father's decision. When the night they plan to elope arrives, Morris never arrives.

Catherine is heartbroken. Shortly thereafter, after a fight with her father, he reveals that he is dying. She tells her father that she still is in love with Morris and challenges him to change his will if he's afraid of how she will spend his money after he dies. He does not and dies a short time later, leaving his entire estate to her.
