STURBRIDGE — The discussions have taken place, the notices have been delivered, and the information has been posted.

After months of preparation, it is now officially time for owners of property abutting Routes 20 and 131 to assume responsibility for clearing snow and ice from their sidewalks.

As of Monday, Jan. 24, the town began enforcing section 9.02 of its bylaws, which states property owners must remove ice and snow from sidewalks within 24 hours of the completion of a snowstorm.

The Board of Selectmen had initially set the enforcement date for Jan. 15, but members of the Board wanted to ensure that abutters were given a minimum of 30 days of advance notice in order to make the necessary preparatory arrangements.

"With snow on the horizon, residents should be reminded of their obligation to clear sidewalks which abut their property," said Town Administrator Shaun Suhoski on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 25, in preparation of today's probable snow event. "This is in the interest of public safety and liability avoidance to the town's taxpayers as a group."
