SOUTHBRIDGE — Newly named Department of Public Works Director Thomas Daley has a lot of weight on his shoulders.

He doesn't see this as a problem.

Daley was appointed Monday, Jan. 10, at a Town Council meeting and will begin work Monday, Jan. 31.

"From what I've seen, Southbridge has a great DPW facility and has great workers in the department," said Daley, who did the same job in Newton. "I have a challenging job and I'm very hands-on. The fact that this is a much smaller community is great, since I can be directly involved in a lot of projects. I love being able to be an engineer and to go with maybe one other worker and do survey work. I plan on doing as much work as possible in-house, which is a good way to save money."

Originally from Uxbridge, his plans on moving to the town soon aren't certain. He has a daughter that still has two more years of high school left, but doesn't rule anything out and is taking those matters "one day at a time."
