Relay’s global approach

2011 theme is Relay Around the World

January 04, 2011
SOUTHBRIDGE — The 2011 Southbridge Area Relay For Life will kick off a new year of fundraising and planning at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 11 at the VFW Post 6055 Hall on 219 Everett St.

At the kickoff meeting, a grand prize of $500 worth of scratch tickets will be raffled. Tickets are being sold for $5 and have been limited to 500 tickets.

“A one-in-500 chance for that many scratch tickets isn’t too bad,” said Ron Ravenelle, a co-chairman for the Relay For Life. “Especially with the money going to a worth cause. It’s worth a shot.”

The kickoff event will outline the year’s activities. Fundraisers are held year-round, but their biggest fundraiser of the year is the Relay For Life. The relay is held on Friday, June 17, at McMahon Field at Southbridge High School.

Teams will camp out in tents around the area and take turns walking around the track from start to finish. Teams are asked to have a representative walking at all times, because “cancer never sleeps.”

In 2010, the Southbridge Relay for Life raised a total of $200,166 for the American Cancer Society. Through a silent auction done by this newspaper, over $4,000 was raised last year. Another silent auction will take place from March 17 – 31.
