Date is set for special town vote
Decorum an issue at Monday's session
December 14, 2010
SOUTHBRIDGE — Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011 to fill the vacant Town Council seat of the late Laurent E. McDonald, as those already serving on the panel were chided on meeting decorum this week.
The date of the Special Town Election was announced at the Town Council Meeting on Monday, Dec. 13. The 16-month term of the person elected will expire June 30, 2012.
The last day to submit nomination papers to the Board of Registrars for certification of signatures will be 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28. Forty-four signatures of registered voters are required on nomination papers to begin the process. The last day for filing certified nomination papers with the Town Clerk's office is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11. The last day for filing withdrawals by candidates or objections to nominations is 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14. Precinct 2 votes at the West Street School and all other precincts vote at the Community Center.
After last week's heated debate between Councilors over voting for a Vice Chairman without the entire Council present, Chairman Steven Lazo began the meeting by reminding the panel of the basic tenets of conduct and decorum that should be observed during meetings.
"Number one, confine remarks to the pending question," Lazo said.
He read off a laundry list of dos and don'ts including that councilors should refrain from attacking the motives of another councilor or speaker.
