It can be an exciting experience for a middle school student to receive praise for their work from parents, teachers, and principals.

Imagine having one's artwork honored by a state senator — especially when you are among only three students in the state to receive such praise.

State Sen. Stephen M. Brewer, D-Barre, visited two local middle schools Thursday morning to honor the runners-up in his 14th annual Christmas Card Contest.

Brewer arrived at Knox Trail Jr. High School in Spencer at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9 to congratulate eighth-grader Anna Bogdan, and then traveled to Charlton Middle School an hour later to honor seventh-grader Veronica Dumas.

Brewer is no stranger to Charlton with respect to this contest — the 2009 Christmas card contest winner was Gabrielle Ray, then a seventh-grader at Charlton Middle School.

In Charlton Thursday, Brewer held up the drawing he'd selected as "runner-up," asking if anyone recognized it as their work. In the back of the room, a girl's hand slowly rose, and Veronica Dumas came forward.

"It's important a 12-year-old turn a lovely shade of crimson," Brewer quipped as she did so. Previously, he'd noted, "the rule here is you have to use the check to buy your mother a Christmas gift."
