SOUTHBRIDGE — For the third time in a week, Southbridge lost a notable voice in town affairs. Late Wednesday evening, former Town Councilor and long-time Planning Board member Peter Ramirez, 71, died in his sleep.

People who knew him saw strength in Ramirez.

"He was straightforward and always by the book," said Planning chairman Paul St. Jean. "He was the consummate man's man politician."

To St. Jean, one of the things that most clearly reflects Ramirez's character happened several years ago, when he was promoting revisions of the town bylaws.

"A lot of the stuff done by his subcommittee was attacked by some on the council, but he stuck to his guns and got it passed," he recalled.

Economic Development Director Cassandra Acly said she saw Ramirez as "very methodical."
