Recount under way for 6th Worcester seat
November 17, 2010
In five local communities, this is the week of the recount.
Town clerks in Charlton, East Brookfield, Southbridge, Spencer and Oxford will again count ballots cast in the 6th Worcester District race between state Rep. Geraldo Alicea, D-Charlton, and Republican Peter Durant, a selectman in Spencer.
East Brookfield conducted its recount Tuesday night, while Charlton's was done Wednesday morning. Southbridge will conduct its recount at 9 a.m. Thursday in the town clerk's office at Town Hall. Spencer's will start at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Great Hall at Memorial Town Hall. Oxford will round out the group by doing its recount Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
Before the recounts this week, Durant held a four-vote lead over Alicea in his effort to succeed the two-term legislator. If the count holds, it would be Durant's first time holding a state office.
After results announced on Election Day, Nov. 2, Durant was leading by two votes. Days later, he picked up two more provisional votes and Alicea one, giving Durant a four-vote cushion. That margin held after provisional ballots were counted Nov. 8 in Oxford and each candidate picked up a vote.
The winner will represent all of Charlton, East Brookfield and Southbridge, along with the eastern half of Spencer and one precinct in Oxford, on Beacon Hill.
