Christmas is a season of joy.

Achieving that is sometimes difficult, however, for children of low-income or unemployed families whose parents don't have the resources to buy them even one Christmas gift. That's where Toys for Tots steps in.

The South Central Massachusetts U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots organization is now accepting gift donations in area communities, including Sturbridge and Southbridge, according to its Chairman George Berry. The donation deadline Wednesday, Dec. 15.

"It's a worthwhile program," he said.

New Boston Celtic Shaquille O'Neal — AKA Shaq a Claus — thinks so and is an online spokesman for Toys for Tots this year. His video is featured on the Toys for Tots web site.

While the economy is still struggling, organizers are confident they will still receive adequate donations to satisfy the demand. While there is no set donation goal, Southbridge's Toys for Tots organizer James Sottile said receiving surpluses in prior years indicates they will get a sufficient amount of gifts this year.
