Harrington sizes up the past year

Improvements have been made, more goals are set for 2011

Harrington HealthCare Systems Inc. (HCS) had a good year overall and is planning several improvements in the coming year.

That was the message Harrington officials delivered Tuesday, Nov. 2 at the annual meeting of HCS, the parent company that operates Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge and Harrington Hospital at Hubbard Campus in Webster as well as several other facilities in the area. The gathering was held at the Publick House in Sturbridge. The report covered the period from Sept. 30, 2009 to Sept. 30, 2010 and highlighted improvements inpatient wait times, the physical plant and staff recruiting.

Included in the report was the company's expansion into Charlton with a new physician practice and medical office building featuring a wound care center. HCS CEO Edward Moore said the Charlton venture has worked well and provided additional care to an underserved area.

"It is growing very nicely," he said.

Also, the Harrington Physician Services (HPS) division, which provides care at offices in various communities, rebuilt the Dudley family practice office, services, according to HPS Executive Director Harrington Physician Services Kristin Morales.

"We're seeing the patients coming back," she said. Officials also touted opening the new Cancer Center and renovating the North Wing of the Southbridge campus on South Street.
