SOUTHBRIDGE — Courage under fire took on a new meaning Monday night.

Fire Chief Richard Ciesla and Police Chief Daniel Charette helped honor two police officers and five firefighters for their response to the Sunday, Oct. 17 four-alarm fire at 7 Pearl St, which started at 2:30 a.m. Police Sgts. Wayne Boiteau and Carlos Dingui received Lifesaving Awards. Firefighters Jacques Kallanian and Jonathan Parrettie received official recognition as well as Call Firefighter Travis McDonald and Auxiliary Firefighter Nicholas Cantara.

Dingui and Boiteau both rescued a building resident, David Keets, from approaching flames, while the firefighters used a ladder truck to bring Keets's wife, Debra Shank, to safety. Both men said they did not hesitate to spring into action.

"It's one of those things you don't even think [about doing]," he said. "You have to go in."

Boiteau said he was just doing his job.

"I did what had to be done," he said.
