BRIMFIELD — A fundraising effort for the Relay for Life is giving people the opportunity to support the fight against cancer and brighten up their homes with a nicely scented candle.

Joyce Stocks, owner of the Green Thumb Florist and Gardens and Sturbridge Candle Company at 381 Sturbridge Road (Route 20), Brimfield, is selling soy candles she makes to raise money for the American Cancer Society's Southbridge Relay for Life. Stocks said she has set a goal of $10,000 before the relay on June 17, 2011.

Stocks said she has participated in many Relay events in the past. She has had friends and family members afflicted with cancer and has lost people to the disease. She said supporting research cancer and the cancer-related services provided by the Cancer Society is a way to lend a hand to others facing cancer.

"Everyone knows somebody who has been affected by cancer," she said. "As a business person I thought I could do more to help. I am doing this for personal reasons, but I realized I have the resources to make a difference."

Stocks said she chose to support the Relay for Life because the event is moving and brings people together for mutual support and because the ACS has does much to support cancer research and improve the lives of cancer patients and their families.

"The volunteers at the Relay are 100-percent dedicated to the cause," she said. "The relays are very moving and you meet many survivors who are just wonderful people. It is a place for people to come together and the relay itself has an impact on everyone who attends."
