STURBRIDGE — People with restricted diets or those looking for organic or vegan food have a new option for their culinary needs.

Peas on Earth, a specialty health-food store now open and ready for business. The store is located at 454 Main St., Sturbridge.

The store carries a variety of foodstuffs for those interested in eating vegan, are looking for organic food or are on a gluten-free diet. Items range from snacks to breads and baked goods to pre-made meals and cooking products. Some things found at the store are gluten-free muffins and deserts, pizzas and taco shells, organic egg whites and hummus, soy yogurt, pudding and creamer. For vegans, there is vegan cheese and falafels.

Owners Donn Fleming and Paula Aversa said they decided to open the store after having difficulty finding gluten-free and organic food for their 8-year-old son, who needed to be on a gluten-free diet after an illness.

"There was nothing within an hour radius," said Aversa, who lives in Sturbridge. "The goal here is to carry items you can't find anywhere else in the area. We are trying to specialize in foods you can feel good about feeding your family."

Aversa is a certified nutritionist and familiar with food allergies. She contends that much of what modern people eat is damaging their bodies and will cause long-term problems. This is what she said happened with the couple's son, who became healthier after being on an organic and gluten-free diet.
