Ely contract pending
Shaw takes helm at Easford Road

SOUTHBRIDGE — The second of three new principals ended up in what she dubbed "the hot seat" Tuesday, as the new chief of Eastford Road School, Diane Shaw, was formally introduced to the School Committee.
Shaw's hiring leaves one principalship still vacant — at West Street School. Acting Superintendent Cortney Keegan said that post's search committee was recently formed and the advertisement published. She said she believes the committee will finish the first round of interviews before the new permanent superintendent, Eric Ely, takes over, then he will make the final selection.
Regarding Ely, Chairman John Jovan Jr stated the committee is still negotiating his contract, but gave no details. It spent a fair amount of time in executive session after the public meeting for that issue.
In other business, the committee re-elected Jovan to the chairmanship by a 5-2 vote, with no other candidates. It named Scott Lazo vice-chair by a 6-1 vote, thus putting a Lazo in one of the top two seats on both of Southbridge's elected bodies. (His brother, Steven, is Town Council chair.)
Also, the panel unanimously gave Keegan authority to audit the student activities funds after she told them state law requires it, but they haven't been done in "a long time." She noted they are separate from the rest of the district's funding, which is reviewed regularly as part of the town audit process.
