Vendors for the season's initial farmers markets have been scarcer than hens' teeth, area organizers say.

"Last week we only had one vendor," said Southbridge Agricultural Commissioner George Parent, whose group oversees the newly-established farmers market held each Friday on the Town Common.

Charlton planned to hold its first market Friday, July 2 on the Common, but the manager of the sole vendor to signed up, Charlton Orchards, broke his leg and could not be there, according to Selectman Kathleen Walker, who is helping to organize the market.

"We were hoping for probably a half a dozen vendors," she said.

Despite the troubles, Walker said Charlton's two other market days held Tuesday and Sunday at the Community Center, have gone well so far.

"That went off really well," Walker said of the Tuesday market.
