RMV OK'd for Senior Center
Charlton site to close
June 29, 2010
SOUTHBRIDGE — The Registry of Motor Vehicles is returning to Southbridge.
In an 8-1 vote Monday, June 28, Town Councilors approved a 10-year lease to move a new branch into the Casaubon Senior Center on Larochelle Way. The Senior Center will move to the Community Center/Armory on Chestnut Street within 30 days and the new RMV will open in about 60 days, depending on when permits are obtained, according to Town Manager Christopher Clark.
Under the deal, the RMV would close its Charlton branch on the Massachusetts Turnpike and move staff to the new Southbridge site, according to Town Council Chairman Steven Lazo.
Once opened, the new branch will replace the former branch at the Big Bunny plaza, which the RMV closed last August, citing budget cuts. About a month later, the RMV opened the Charlton site.
The new branch will be an "express" registry, with driving and licensing permit tests remaining at the state's Department of Transportation facility in Sturbridge. Clark, however, said the branch could expand in the future.
The RMV will pay for any necessary improvements, and the town would pay for plowing costs, Clark said. Overall, Southbridge would not lose money on the first two years of the deal, and would gain money thereafter.
