SOUTHBRIDGE — Recreation Committee candidate Suzy Geers is calling on the Town Council to change a bylaw that requires committee members to be residents of the town.

Geers, whom the Education and Human Services subcommittee unanimously recommended be appointed to the Recreation Committee Thursday, June 10, suggested the bylaw be modified to allow non-residents who are devoted to the community, to serve.

"We're losing all these great people who want to help," she said.

Geers, who will replace outgoing member Walter Bird Jr., this newspaper's editor, cited Bird as an example. As a result of the bylaw, which requires committee members be Southbridge residents, Bird, a former Southbridge resident now living Brimfield, recently announced he would remain on the group until the town finds his replacement.

Reached by telephone after the meeting, Bird said he would "absolutely" remain if the bylaw were changed before his term expires June 30 and if Town Manager Christopher Clark reappointed him.

"I love this [committee job] It is the most non-political committee I could be involved with," Bird said. "I want to stay on the committee. I love Southbridge. It is my town."
