Sturbridge selectman censured
June 09, 2010
STURBRIDGE — The Board of Selectmen voted to officially censure Selectman Scott Garieri Monday as the result of a sexual harassment investigation.
The investigation led by the town's sexual harassment officers Town Administrator Shaun Suhoski and Finance Director Barbara Barry, stemmed from verbal exchanges between Garieri and resident Carol Childress who were both serving on the Town Administrator Search Committee earlier this year.
Despite several heated exchanges with one another during the search process, Childress' specific complaint came after a Feb. 2 meeting during which Garieri criticized her — and committee member Linda Cocalis' — performance during candidate interviews.
As tensions mounted, Childress twice called Garieri "a piece of [expletive]." Moments later, Childress told Garieri she left dirty being around him, to which the selectman responded, "You are dirty, you're a whore."
Suhoski and Barry's ruling, that Garieri's choice of words did in fact violate the town's sexual harassment policy, came down on Thursday, May 20.
Because Garieri is a Selectman and not an employee of the town, he is not subject to the ramifications outlined in the Personnel Policy.
