SOUTHBRIDGE — A two-car collision on Rt. 169 in Southbridge Wednesday resulted in a car fire and one injury.

According to Sgt. Wayne A. Boiteau Jr., on Wednesday, May 19, Southbridge Police Department and fire personnel were called to 716 Worcester St., at approximately 4:53 p.m., to respond to what was reported as a head-on collision between two vehicles. He said the caller also reported that there were injuries and a car fire in progress.

The drivers involved in the accident were identified as Daniel Toedt, 49, of Worcester, and Steven Thompson, 51, of Holland.

Boiteau said after an investigation into the incident police officers discovered that Toedt had "veered his Ford Explorer to the left to avoid a collision with two vehicles that were slowing or stopping in the south bound lane."

Toedt's car then collided with Thompson's Ford Ranger pickup truck, which was traveling northbound on Rt. 169.

According to Boiteau, Thompson was transported to UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester by Charlton EMS for a possible chest injury. Currently Thompson is being evaluated for injuries at the hospital.

Boiteau said a family member took Toedt to Harrington Memorial Hospital for further treatment, an update on his condition was not available Wednesday night.
