Most moms like to be pampered on Mothers Day, the one day of the year set aside specifically for the anchor of the family.

For the ladies — and families — of the Sturbridge area MOMs Club, however, this Mothers Day was spent canvassing neighborhoods collecting donations for local food pantries.

The Sturbridge MOMs Club is a social networking organization for stay-at-home and professional mothers, offering a number of activities for mothers and children, offering an outlet for socialization and recreation to families looking to meet other families and get involved in the surrounding communities.

The local chapter of the club has members not only from Sturbridge, but Brimfield, Holland, Wales, Spencer and the Brookfields as well.

Danielle Wilson of the MOMs Club said the organization conducts a handful of charitable events every year, each one benefiting a different cause.

"Normally, we do a community service project each season," Wilson said.

This spring, the group decided on a food drive in hopes of giving a boost to local pantries that typically collect the bulk of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season.

"We wanted to fill up the food pantries when people aren't really thinking about food pantries," Wilson said. "We realize that food pantries need replenishment any time of the year."
