SOUTHBRIDGE — Although the sign on his Orchard Street office is still up, Dr. Alvin Chua's internal medicine practice essentially no longer exists.

Call his office in Brookfield, and the message tersely notes he's "closed until further notice." Meanwhile, Harrington Hospital spokesman Thomas Nutile observed, "He notified the hospital he's no longer practicing in Southbridge or Brookfield, and he resigned from the medical staff."

At issue is the fact Chua is under investigation by the state Board of Registration in Medicine, but the board cannot legally say why. Board spokesman Russell Aims said he normally wouldn't even be able to confirm or deny the fact Chua's being investigated, but as of April 14, it is public record that the doctor entered a voluntary agreement to stop practicing medicine until the investigation is complete.

The board's Web site indicates he was one of five doctors involved in board actions that day, the most recent listed. None of the others are local.

"I understand that by voluntarily agreeing not to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts pursuant to this Agreement, I do not waive my right to contest any allegations brought against me by the Board and my signature to this Agreement does not constitute any admissions on my part," Chua's statement reads, in part. "Nothing contained in this Agreement shall be construed as an admission or acknowledgment by me as to wrongdoing of any kind in the practice of medicine or otherwise."
