An area lawmaker critical of embattled Registrar of Motor Vehicles Rachel Kaprielian stopped short of calling on her to resign, but said support for her is "eroding."

State Sen. Stephen Brewer, D-Barre, knows the registrar personally, but said he may eventually call on Gov. Deval Patrick to fire Kaprielian amid ongoing controversy over the agency moving its Southbridge branch to Charlton last year.

Town officials and residents are calling for Kaprielian to resign.

"I'm not there yet, but I'm more there than I have been," Brewer said. "I have had real problems with her attitude. The more people would call for it, the less likely she would be to do it."

Patrick spokesman Juan Martinez, in an e-mail response to a request for a comment from Patrick, said "We have not received any such requests [for Kaprielian's resignation]. The governor has full confidence in the Registrar."

Acknowledging the registrar has made difficult decisions with a shrinking budget, Brewer said her attitude perturbs him despite her trying her best.
