CHARLTON — Three Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School students were transported to the hospital Thursday after a vehicle struck the school bus that was taking them home.

The accident occurred at 2:53 p.m. when the driver of a green sedan traveling on Oxford Road toward Richardson Corner Road lost control and struck the oncoming bus, which was transporting students home, according Police Officer Derek Gaylord. The accident occurred near 86 Oxford Road as snow fell on the region.

The female driver of the sedan was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, according to Assistant Fire Chief Michael Mahan said. First Student Spokesman Maureen Richmond, whose firm owned the bus involved, said the driver was uninjured.

According to Mahan, two students complaining of back and neck pain — one male, one female — were transported to the hospital. The male was taken to Harrington Memorial Hospital by a Charlton ambulance, while an Oxford Fire ambulance transported the female to HarringtonHealth Care at Hubbard Campus in Webster, Mahan said. A third student was taken to an area hospital, with "unspecified injuries," according to Richmond. All of the students, she said, were "transported more as a precaution. I don't know the extent of the injury."

Bay Path Superintendent David Papagni said he was aware of the accident, but referred further comment to First Student.

A second bus was sent to the scene to transport the remaining students home, Richmond said.
