January 21, 2010
more than a decade of processing dog licenses, preparing for elections and performing countless other tasks, Susan J. Nichols is resigning as town clerk.

Citing health reasons, Nichols submitted her letter of resignation Tuesday, Jan. 19. It is effective Jan. 31. Her husband, Tom, delivered it to Town Hall, she said.

"I have not been able to go in [to work] since August," Nichols said during an interview in the doorway of her City Depot Road home Tuesday, the day of a special election in which she voted, but did not work.

Nichols will depart with a little more than a year left to her term, which expires in May 2011. Voters re-elected her to a three-year term in May 2008, when she defeated challenger Lawrence Gilligan.

Nichols, who was elected town clerk in 1995 (she had been serving as interim town clerk), did not clarify whether she would be working all the way up until Jan. 31, but indicated she would be working some days. She said she has been receiving her paycheck since August, and had hoped to return to the job.

Her health condition, about which she did not get specific, stopped her.
