CHARLTON — Choosing the Registry of Motor Vehicles parking lot off Route 20 for its symbolism, Spencer Selectman Peter Durant formally declared his Republican candidacy Saturday for the 6th Worcester District State Representative seat now held by Democrat Geraldo Alicea.

With a few cars pulling in and out and even a big truck passing behind him as if on cue, Durant claimed the site represents Beacon Hill's short sightedness.

"It moved [here] in the name of cost savings, when the economic value of this location is ten times greater" than the rent the Registry was paying in Southbridge, he said. Furthermore, he added, it showed lack of concern for the people who actually use the site — senior citizens and others who may not have Internet access.
