SOUTHBRIDGE — Hoping it's their "lucky 13," the Relay for Life of the Southbridge Area kicked off its annual organizing and fundraising effort this week leading up to the June 18 Relay itself.

This year's effort occurs in a mixture of sameness and change. As in past years, the event will be at McMahon Field next to Southbridge High School, but it faces a somewhat challenging economy.

"We do all our own fundraising, so all of what we raise goes to ACS [American Cancer Society]," said organizer Ron Ravenelle. "We don't have some company soliciting for us and taking 70 percent off the top."

Fellow organizing committee member Faye Sweeney agreed, noting this economy makes it hard to encourage supporters.

"There's so many great causes out there, but the businesses are having a hard time staying afloat as it is," she observed. "We're really looking for one other major sponsor. If we could even get one $5,000 sponsor," that would make a difference.
