SOUTHBRIDGE — Holly Benoit walked out of Big Bunny grocery store last week with a few items that have not traditionally filled her cart.

One-percent milk, grapes and blackberries were some of the healthier foods Benoit, of Southbridge, purchased using changes to the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) supplemental food program. The federal program, implemented by states and partner organizations, provides healthier food choices free of charge to qualifying applicants.

"We will live a lot longer and it is good for the kids," said Benoit, a -33-year-old mother of three children, including a 3-month old girl.

The state Department of Health (DOH) has added several healthier food choices to the list items members can buy at participating grocery stores, according to a Tuesday, Oct. 6 press release. WIC members can now buy whole grain cereals and breads, canned or dried beans, brown rice, tortillas, and tofu. Jarred baby foods are also available, as well as checks for fruits and vegetables. Children older than 2, and women, can now choose from low-fat or non-fat milk.
