New interest by 'smaller' casinos seen
Penn firm,others investigate region

Although most people in the area are already aware of the large proposed Mohegan Sun casino in Palmer, they're not the only gamers looking at our towns.
Late last month, Penn National Gaming toured the area feeling out local officials on the prospects for building a smaller casino somewhere along the Mass Pike. Among those visited were Sturbridge and Auburn.
Sturbridge interim Town Administrator Mike Racicot said he talked to Penn National's representatives briefly, noting, among other things, that the town is a member of the anti-Palmer-casino effort.
"We talked about OSV and how that might not be a good fit," and they seemed to prefer to move on, he said.
Auburn, however, will look into the idea a bit more deeply.
