Three named to Sturbridge search panel

Disagreement over final position creates friction

September 24, 2009
STURBRIDGE — Selectmen clashed Thursday on who should be appointed as the final member of the Town Administrator Search Committee.

One seat on the five-person panel remains open after three new members were selected at the Thursday, Sept. 24 meeting. Selectmen could not agree on a fifth member for the committee. They plan to meet Wednesday, Sept. 30, to appoint the final member.

Board of Health Chairman Linda Cocalis, Department of Public Works Director Greg Morse, and former candidate for selectman James Erhardt were added to the new panel.

Selectman Scott Garieri remained on the committee after four others resigned en masse during a joint Tuesday, Sept. 8 meeting between Selectmen and the first search committee.

The arguments on the final member boiled down to two people. Motions to appoint former selectman Arnold Wilson, and Conservation Commission member Jeffrey Bonja failed — both with 2-2 votes. Selectman Tom Creamer and Garieri voted against Wilson. Selectmen Harold White and Ted Goodwin voted against Bonja.
