Discordant notes over concert series

Troubled program receives scrutiny

September 14, 2009
SOUTHBRIDGE — Last week, anyone going by the Common would have seen a sign announcing a concert there Saturday by Classic Brass.

But that concert never happened, only the latest in a series of problems befuddling the long-running summer concert series.

According to an email from sponsor Laura Kaplan of the Southbridge Interfaith Hospitality Network, it was being postponed and she had informed the town, but she didn't state a new date.

Other shows, however, have faced weather issues, poor turnout, communications breakdown or, in at least one case, confusion over who was actually scheduled to play. On a few occasions, show organizer Sue Pelletier even received "very nasty phone calls" because things didn't go well. The stress has exacerbated an underlying illness, she said, and prompted her to say she doesn't "have the energy to do it anymore."
