STURBRIDGE — One year after her son, Patrick E. Donnelly, was fatally shot in Jacksonville, Fla., Kathy Johnson said, "It's just yesterday to me."

Johnson, along with family and friends, is now getting ready to host the first official Patrick Donnelly Foundation event to raise funds for a scholarship to be awarded to a student following Donnelly's same path, from Tantasqua Regional High School to Westfield State College.

The mission of the Patrick Donnelly Foundation, Johnson said, is to honor his life, "and his spirited compassion for learning and drive to be educated. To award scholarships to selected qualified applicants who demonstrate themselves to be deserving, college bound high school seniors so as to further their higher education."

Donnelly graduated from Tantasqua in 2000, and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in history from Westfield State College.
