Facelift for a downtown


Facade program to be renewed

SOUTHBRIDGE — Helping someone save face often means making it look like they won when they didn't. But in development, saving facades can sometimes spark turning a troubled downtown into a thriving one.

Or, at least, that's what Economic Development Director Sandy Acly hopes as she seeks proposals for a new downtown facade renovation project. She hopes to kick it off by awarding a contract for architectural and design work "within a couple of Town Council cycles."

"It's not a cure-all," Acly said. "Ö But if storefronts aren't in good condition, it makes downtown look like its not in good condition. You want to attract people to downtown; it has to be eye appealing."
