Stabbing victim in critical condition
August 18, 2009
SOUTHBRIDGE — The mother of the man who allegedly stabbed a Southbridge woman said her son has an undiagnosed mental condition.
"My son is an 18-year-old with a 14-year-old mind," said Carmen Beauchamp, the Southbridge mother of Alex Santana.
After initially thinking Leah Diver, the victim and girlfriend of Santana, was pregnant, Police Chief Daniel Charette said differently Wednesday morning.
"Now we are being told that the medical personnel have told [Diver] that she is not pregnant and never was," he said, after speaking with State Police detectives yesterday.
Charette said Diver told police and EMTs who responded to the stabbing that she was pregnant.
Santana is facing charges of assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon after he allegedly stabbed Diver, 28, of 78 Pine St., late last week. He is being held on $500,000 cash bail at the Worcester County House of Correction. Police arrested him at his Williams Street home.
Santana, who believed Diver was pregnant, allegedly stabbed her around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning. Santana told police he was "going to abort the pregnancy 'one way or the other,'" according to court documents.
