Selectmen talk HOGs
Town to host Harley bike rally
July 08, 2009
STURBRIDGE — At a somewhat abbreviated meeting, the lengthiest topic of conversation for Sturbridge selectmen Monday night was HOGs.
Ed McDonald, site coordinator for the state rally of the Harley Owners Group, or HOGs, joined selectmen to discuss some of the particulars for the Harley Davidson enthusiasts' late summer rally to be hosted this year in Sturbridge.
McDonald explained that although this specific rally regularly changes location, the three days in August when the HOGs are in town will be like a shot of adrenaline to Sturbridge's commercial tourist district, saying the two things HOGs always travel with are loud bikes and full wallets.
"When we leave the wallets will not be quite as full, but the motorcycles will still be loud," McDonald said, citing a study conducted by Harley Davidson that estimates the average participant in a rally the size of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island State Rally, which is coming to Sturbridge, spends approximately $256 per day on meals and shopping in the hosting community.
