Candidates square off
Gloves come off in Town Clerk forum

SOUTHBRIDGE — It did not take long for Thursday night's town clerk debate to devolve into an angry session of professional and personal attacks.
The two opponents, incumbent Madaline Daoust and challenger John Pulawski, squared off in a debate moderated by Southbridge resident Richard Merrill. The election is set for Tuesday, June 30.
The sparks started in the opening statements portion with both candidates taking different tacks on the job description of town clerk. After saying "I would like to be running for the board of health right now," Pulawski said he would post public meeting notices in a more visible place, including the town Web site. Daoust, who has held the post for six years, said she posts them on a calendar in her office and on a board in the foyer of the Town Hall. Acknowledging Internet meeting notices would be more convenient, Daoust said she "would never do that" because she fears the posting would be incorrect. Pulawski took issue with that.
"I'll do it myself," he said, to which Daoust quickly responded.
"You are going to be very busy, John," she said.
