Auburn could soon be on its way to becoming the hub of clean energy in Massachusetts.

The town was named the future host for one of the world's most advanced lithium ion battery manufacturing plants by Boston Power.

On Monday, June 1 many prominent state and local officials assembled in the parking lot of the former Filene's Basement warehouse building on Millbury Street — the future site of the manufacturing plant — to hear the announcement. The new facility would produce and meet the demand for eco-certified lithium-ion batteries for plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles, notebook PCs and national security applications. In addition to producing eco-certified batteries, the facility is also projected to produce 600 jobs and 2,000 more jobs indirectly.
