King bows out of Council race
Startled reactions among remaining nine candidates

SOUTHBRIDGE — It's now guaranteed that Southbridge will see a new face on the Town Council. At the 11th hour, incumbent Councilor Robert King bowed out of the race Friday, sparking surprised responses from fellow candidates. As his reason, King initially said "an opportunity" at his new job would require more time, and his boss called him with just minutes before the deadline. But during conversation he also pointed to several other factors involved in his decision. "I reviewed the last three years — where we started and where we are — and I didn't want to bang my head against a wall any more," he said. "Ö I'm not the type of guy who can sit around and wait for things to happen."
