National Public Lands Day opportunities abound locally

September 19, 2012
With plenty of events scheduled in the area, volunteers have several opportunities to take part in the eighteenth annual National Public Lands Day.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park rangers have teamed up with local trail committees in Brimfield, Holland, Sturbridge and Southbridge, as well as the Grand Trunk Trailblazers, to make preparations for National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 22. Because so many events are planned and volunteers have requested to take part in events in different towns, many projects will also take place the following Saturday.

On Sept. 22, the Holland Trail Committee and park rangers will work to improve the Lake Siog Pass, a trail that links Holland and Lake Siog to the Grand Trunk Trail in Brimfield. Work will include minor grass and brush trimming, base gravel spreading, and the application of fine gravel to the finished surface. The Holland Trail Committee has a special need for small utility bucket tractors to assist in the fine gravel work. Registration will be held at the trail head parking lot on Pond Bridge Road starting at 8:30 a.m.
