District looking at new extended day program

Elementary schools want before-school 'enrichment'

SOUTHBRIDGE — The school system is looking at recreating an extended-day academic program funded out of federal grant money. But the School Committee delayed deciding on it until Sept. 11 to learn more about it.

At that point the three principals involved, Diane Shaw, Bryant Montigny and Dana Labb, and Curriculum Director Amy Allen will provide program details, but the committee started exploring it last week.

"Because many parents have to go to work, they don't have care for their children in the mornings," Shaw said. "But our teachers don't start until 8:15 by contract, so we need money to have someone start earlier."
