State sues fraudulent charity that solicited Charlton donations

September 03, 2012
CHARLTON — A veterans charity organization that was recently soliciting donations in town that they said would benefit veterans from Charlton is now being sued by the Attorney General's Office for fraud.

In April members of the Charlton American Legion reported that a group called Bay State Vietnam Veterans called residents in town asking for donations, allegedly fraudulently identifying themselves as being connected to Charlton veterans by claiming that all money solicited would go directly to benefiting local veterans.

"They make it sound like they are local and that money is going right here in town and that's just not happening," American Legion Post 391 Post Adjutant Dan Dono said at the time. "The Charlton American Legion is the only veterans organization in Charlton and we do not solicit over the phone or anywhere else. We don't approve of them saying they related to veterans in Charlton."
