High school restores hoodies, backpacks

'The time is right for this'

August 27, 2012
SOUTHBRIDGE — When students go back to school Sept. 4, they'll be facing a huge number of changes, not to mention having to learn new buildings.

For the high school kids, though, one of the more subtle changes may be the sign of a truly new era, so to speak. After several years of prohibition, they'll be able to wear hooded sweatshirts (hoodies) and backpacks in the school.

Both were banned some time ago for security-related and other reasons. According to Assistant Principal Greg Leach, the hooded sweatshirts made it too easy for people to hide their identity when doing things they shouldn't have been, including ditching classes by slipping out one of Cole Avenues many doors. In some cases, he added, students had headphones or cell phones under their hoodies and weren't paying attention in class.
